How to Make a Leather Jewelry Dish

 DIY LEATHER JEWELRY DISH

You need:

  • Leather Multi Hole Punch Tool
  • Leather Hide Scrapes - 1.4mm-2.0mm (See Portland Leather Goods)
  • Scissors
  • Studs
  • Ruler
  • Pencil or Pen
  • Or you could get the full tool kit here

Step 1: Create Your Pattern

You’ll need the ruler, leather, and pencil or pen for this first step. The first thing you want to do is take your leather and turn it over so the backside is facing up. Take your pencil or pen and draw a triangle on the back of your leather using your ruler to create straight lines along the sides. (we did about a 7-inch triangle)

Step 2: Punch the Holes in the Corners

In this step use your scissors and hole punch tool. Next, use your scissors to cut out your triangle by following the pencil or pen line you just created. Take the leather hole punch tool and at each corner, punch two holes 1cm (half an inch) from the edge. This is going to be the hole you connect each corner together, so make sure the hole is aligned with the edge and balanced the same width from the edge.

Step 3: Put the Studs in Place

Next, you will need the studs. Place the bottom part of the stud through one hole. As you begin to fold up the leather you will see the bowl begun to take shape. This is an important step, as the alignment of the studs once fastened will balance the entire dish.

Step 4: Fold the Leather

As you fold the leather over make sure that the two holes match up. After each hole is perfectly matched up you will want to complete the studs by adding the top of the stud. You will then repeat this step with all three sides of the triangle. Adding the studs in the same direction. Once all the studs are all in, fold the leather along the crease to create that unique fold.

One of the best parts about working with real full-grain leather is the distinct special leather smell, which only adds to the character of the project. When using full-grain leather the entire piece will grow in character with age. Which is an added bonus to giving genuine leather projects as gifts.

Time to pat yourself on the back, you did it! Once everything is put together, you can keep this special bowl for yourself and add your favorite treasures into it. Things like rings, bracelets, business cards, earrings, lipstick, and even candy, are perfect gems to add to this special project. This little bowl is Pinterest worthy and your Instagram friends will love it.
